Steve Uhler Biography
Steve Uhler got his first professional writing assignment when he became the youngest newspaper columnist for The Orange County Daily Pilot in Orange County, California. The then-15-year-old aspiring journalist approached the editor with a proposal for a weekly entertainment column written from a teen’s perspective. ‘What’s Happening’ became a hit with readers throughout Southern California, and Steve continued writing the column for 2 years, learning the ropes of composition, newsroom deadlines and honing his interviewing and critical skills.
His first published interview was with Bill Cosby, then launching a short-lived syndicated radio series. While working for the Pilot, Steve scored exclusive interviews with composer Igor Stravinski, show business icon Sammy Davis, Jr., folk music legend Pete Seeger, and other notables.
Moving to New York in 1985, he got a job as writer and producer at ABC Network, co-scripting the weekly series ‘Our World’ with Linda Elerbee, and working with such broadcast legends as Peter Jennings, Hugh Downs, Dick Cavett, Howard Cossell and Barbara Walters. In 1990, he became Creative Director, Marketing, at ABC Radio Networks, where he expanded his writing skills, producing national radio shows, advertising campaigns, and marketing presentations, and writing for such landmark programs as American Top 40 With Casey Kasem, American Country Countdown, Paul Harvey News & Commentary, and more. He wrote and produced national ad campaigns for such clients as Walt Disney, A&E Television, GM, Frito-Lay, and dozens more.
After leaving ABC in 1997, Steve moved to Austin, Texas, where he began covering Arts & Entertainment for the Austin American Statesman, writing about music and film. Writing over 400 reviews, features and columns, he rapidly gained a national reputation as one of the country’s most astute and compulsively readable film critics. His reviews were carried by both Cox News and the New York Times Wire Service, appearing in major newspapers like Atlanta Journal Constitution, Miami Herald, New York Newsday, and Dallas Morning News .
While at the Statesman, Steve began branching out into more outré features, often incorporating his razor-sharp sense of humor. Many of these ‘off-the-wall’ features often appeared in other papers throughout the USA.
In 2001, his popular book ‘A Movie A Day’ was published by Berkley Blvd. In 2002, he began writing for The Austin Chronicle, one of the most respected Alternative Weeklies in the nation, and his work also appeared frequently in Austin Monthly. In 2003, his feature-length history of Austin as ‘Live Music Capitol of the World’ – ‘The Beat Goes On’ – received the prestigious Lone Star Award for Best Feature.
An insightful and gifted interviewer, he has scored exclusive in-depth interviews with such diverse personalities as Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Pete Seeger, Peter Fonda, Tobe Hooper, Richard Linklater, Tracey Ullman, Pat Green, Stephen Sondheim, and more.
